Names of Greek and Roman Gods
The Greeks were conquered by the Roman Empire in 146BC. Part of the Roman culture was to adopted different ideas from the other cultures and civilisations they had defeated. Cautious not to offend foreign gods this process included the assimilation of the native gods and goddesses that were worshipped by other nations. The Ancient Romans just changed the Greek God names to Latin (Roman) equivalents or counterparts. This process and practice is called 'syncretism' which means the fusion of gods, goddesses, religious practices and beliefs to integrate into their existing system.
